  • Albert Roussel

    5.4.1869 Tourcoing  -  23.8.1937 Royan

  • Albert Roussel

    5.4.1869 Tourcoing  -  23.8.1937 Royan

Many renowned musicians have performed world premieres by Albert Roussel, such as Alfred Cortot, Jane Bathori, Robert Casadesus, Serge Koussevitzky, Marthe Dron and Louis Fournier. Roussel's music had a great impact on subsequent generations of composers. Even Witold Lutosławski described the important influence of Roussel's 1st Symphony on his own music.

Roussel wrote a rather small but varied oeuvre for piano: a compact, gripping Piano Concerto (1927), some solo works and chamber music with piano. His short composition Acceuil des Muses (1920) in memoriam Claude Debussy is particularly moving.

  • Anders Eliasson

    *2.04.1947, Borlänge - 20.05.2013, Stockholm

„Substance, form, shape: all must form a single unified whole! If you try to divide them, you’re done for.”

"All the activities are always related to the same basis, the underlying harmonic flow. If you walk out in the noonday sun, you can see many things of all shapes and sizes everywhere, but they all relate to the sun. Because the sun is shining. It’s the same sort of connection when we talk about music. About the many occurrences and activities within a minimum of time.“
Anders Eliasson (interview with Christoph Schlüren, 1996)

In his music Anders Eliasson found his own, personal "alphabet", as he called it himself. Eliasson's music is shaped by a continuous coherence and a constant inner connection. He composed several pieces for piano, starting with the very expressive "Versione" in 1973, his "Disegno" cycle (1984-2005) being in the center of his output for piano and harpsichord. One of Eliasson's last compositions was his playful "Doppio Concerto" for violin, piano & orchestra (2005).

André Boucourechliev belongs to the important figures of the time of serialism and Aleatorism in Paris of the 50s to 70s. Among his most important works for piano are his Piano Concerto (1975), the 6 Etudes d'aprés Piranése (1975) and the various works entitled Archipel I-V in various formations. In addition to his activities as a composer, Boucourechliev was also a pianist, writer and musicologist. "Composing is a circling of a nucleus that one does not quite reach. In the end there is still dissatisfaction - that will then be the next composition."

"Art is world experience, is knowledge, is emotional education. But this also requires the awareness that some things have not yet been understood. That's how I feel. And that doesn't just apply to Contemporary Music. Even Mozart will never be fully understood."

  • Charles Edward Ives

    20.10.1874, Danbury - 19.5.1954, New York

  • Charles Edward Ives

    20.10.1874, Danbury - 19.5.1954, New York

"There can be nothing exclusive about substantial art. It comes directly out of the heart of the experience of life and thinking about life and living life"
    Charles E. Ives

At the centre of Charles Ives's piano works are his piano sonatas. His Sonata No. 2 ""Concord, Mass. 1840-1860") from the years 1916-1919. But also his monumental 1st Sonata (1915-1916) and the eccentric "Three-Page Sonata" (1910-1911) are extraordinary solo works for piano. In piano chamber music, four violin sonatas, three pieces for piano quintet and above all the piano trio represent Ives' uncompromising musical thinking. Numerous other smaller piano works are evidence for his lifelong creative exploration of the piano.

  • Ernest Bloch

    24 July 1880 Genève  - 15 July 1969 Portland

„Music, as well as other arts, ought to be an integral part of our lives. Every human being is entitled to share it’s beauty. I hold it of first importance to write good, genuine music, my music.“ Ernest Bloch

Ernest Bloch's own instrument was the violin. He composed a lot of chamber music, especially for strings and piano. His violin sonatas and the two piano quintets continue to enjoy great popularity. This also applies to several works for cello and piano (Shelomo, Méditation Hébraïque), which he originally composed for cello and orchestra. Bloch's most important piano compositions include his Piano Sonata (1935), the Five Sketches in Sepia (1923) and the Visions and Prophecies (1935). His piano music has its own signature: With its enormous richness of colour, it is always a nuanced walk between late romantic, impressionistic and expressionistic elements.

  • Ernest Bloch

    24. Juli 1880 Genève  - 15. Juli 1969 Portland
